Do you ever get the feeling that over-the-counter painkillers are just placebos?

Ow.

I woke up with a stiff neck this morning. I have no idea why. My mother and I had plans to go shopping and she wanted to get to the mall early, so I showered last night and went to bed with my hair damp, which I don't usually do. Maybe that contributed to it? And I did have some really funky dreams. Involving my birthday party and people showing up who I didn't remember inviting. Very realistic dreams that I almost could control, because in the dream I would think of something and suddenly it would happen, but I didn't quite realize I was dreaming either. Anyway, the point is I woke up and my neck really hurts and it's gotten worse, not better, since it started. I've only had this happen once or twice before and one of those times it was a pinched nerve that I actually *heard* get pinched. (I was brushing my hair, it was kind of freaky.) But I don't think there's anything I can do for it but put heat on it and wait it out. Of course, I don't have a heating pad. :b

My mom and I did go shopping anyway, and I bought a heck of a lot of stuff for someone who can't move their neck very well. I finally got the gray low-top Converse sneakers I've wanted forever, several new tops, and and a Nine West handbag that I have wanted for months and found for 40% off today! Very exciting.

But now I'm home and doing my best not to move my head around too much. I really hope this goes away soon.

I just need to mention here that my allergies have been giving me HELL pretty much since winter began. In England as well as New York. It must be from the heating. I'm sneezing a lot more and my nose is so constantly itchy that I want to punch myself in the face. The only allergy medicine that's ever seemed to work for me at all, without side effects, is Zyrtec. You need a prescription for it here, but in the UK it's over the counter (or something with a very similar name is, and I think it's the same). I really regret not picking some up while I was over there. I'm afraid if I go to my doctor here and request it, they'll try to prescribe some other thing for me.

It's official - I have been declared a PUBLIC HEALTH MENACE! Exact words used by the nurse practitioner (who is apparently still a "Dr.", I don't get it) who said he couldn't *let* me go to work today. My strep test came back "neon positive." Which was surprising to me, because I don't even feel that bad. I've felt worse and not had strep, and I always thought strep totally laid you out. I could go into the gross-out details of my throat pus, but I won't. I will, however, have to be on penicillin, AGAIN, this time for 10 days! Good thing I went to the doctor when I did, because at least that means I'll be done with it by the time I leave for my tour. But what gives? They said I've probably been carrying the strep around for awhile. If that's true, why didn't my last round of penicillin (for the abscess) knock it out? Mysteries. Oh well, I guess my Labor Day weekend is starting a day early. For the next two days I vow to do as little as possible. I think I can do that.
