I talk food now
Mar. 18th, 2005 11:17 amI'm STARVING. What is wrong with me? It's the books I read. I find these food memoirs, people's culinary autobiographies, and I read them and wonder why I'm famished. Right now it's Miriam's Kitchen, about a woman's history and experiences with kosher cooking. MD's reading a Jewish book! Amazing, right? It's actually making me look at the concept of a kosher kitchen in a different light, seeing it as a mindful spiritual practice and not just a complicated bunch of rules and restrictions (I still don't think I'd ever have the discipline to do it myself though). At one point the author likens being kosher to the rules of a Japanese tea ceremony. Since that was another recent food memoir I read, I could really appreciate that comparison.
Last night I got to go to Donovan's with my family, and we had a fantastic time. Every year, we go to this crowded Irish pub restaurant, put our names on the list, and while we wait over an hour for our table, my Dad plies the whole family with alcohol. :-) Lately I haven't been able to drink whiskey, but my dad insisted on buying me a shot of Jameson anyway, and I discovered Jameson is still perfectly drinkable. My recent problem must only extend to bourbon. And there were many pints as well, of Guinness and Smithwick's, and for dinner I had corned beef and cabbage with lots of Coleman's mustard (damn that stuff is spicy)! Everyone was in a good mood. All in all, it was a lovely time.
Later I plan to finally give in to the tempatation of Easter candy. But for now I'm starving for something cheesy and bad for me. A trip to the bagels upstairs might be in order.
