Oscar recap
Mar. 6th, 2006 09:13 amIf I don't post something about the Oscars now I probably never will. Even though I didn't get into the whole Oscar race thing like I have in previous years, I enjoyed watching the Oscars this year. For one thing, I'm glad everyone's gotten over the whole "there's a war going on, a red carpet's not appropriate" crap. I never really did see how the two were related. If you think it's wrong to have showy excesses of glamour while there's suffering in the world, the Oscars should never go on. They'd all be out adopting the starving children with Angelina. But everyone was back in full glamour, even if none of the dresses were particularly memorable. The were all just "nice." Except Michelle Williams dressed as Big Bird. C'mon, you're a beautiful woman, there's just no excuse for that. Way to lose the baby weight, though.
I didn't see many of the nominated movies. I did see Brokeback Mountain and Walk the Line, and this weekend I saw Capote, which was good. It was just enough to make me feel like I had some knowledge of the nominees.
My opinions on who won and who didn't: George Clooney, while thoroughly likeable, only got that Oscar because he was nominated for three and they would have felt bad making him walk away with none. I really wanted Michelle Williams to get supporting actress because she was probably the best thing about Brokeback Mountain (along with the cinematography). I like Rachel Weisz too and all, but I think if Brokeback was going to get anything it should have gone to Michelle. Oh well. Heath didn't get one either, and it's not like either of them needed Oscars from that movie - they got each other and they got a baby too!
I'm glad Reese won, and while I didn't see Crash I'm glad it won because Ryan Phillippe was in it and so the both of them got to be "winners." Ryan looks so serious all the time and with the constant rumors of their demise, I worry that he's not happy, but maybe that's just the way he is.
As for best song - there really must have been no original music written this year if there were only three nominees and the award went to "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp." All I can think is that maybe the song is really integral to the movie, and since the movie didn't get any awards, this was the Academy's way of recognizing it. Jon Stewart's best line of the night was probably that "Martin Scorscese, 0; Three Six Mafia, 1".
