So much

It's day 6 (of 11) of Nathan's stay...strange how it feels like he's been here so long and I keep reminding myself he's still here for 5 more days. I guess when the break ended, it felt like his stay was ending too, but not the case. Right now I'm at work (doing pretty much nothing) while he's walking around the city, going to museums, and taking in the sights. I'm jealous. I knew I couldn't take off the first day back from break but being here feels so pointless right now.

I made a list of things for us to do, and with all we've done in the past few days, I'm amazed at how much is still left on this list. Even some things that were must-dos.

Things to do in NYC with Nathan (things that are crossed out have been done)
(Get a Time Out NY!)

Manhattan:
East Village/LES pub crawl, including some "beatnik" bars (maybe Friday?)
Eat at Peep
LES Tenement museum
see a show at Mercury Lounge (we're doing this tonight)
Chinatown/Little Italy
Battery Park City (Stuyvesant and sculpture park)

Walk through Central Park (Strawberry Fields, Belvedere castle, Alice sculpture, Cleopatra's needle) -- we did walk through Strawberry Fields
Ice skating in Central Park
Dine in a rooftop restaurant (dessert at the Marriott?)
Roosevelt Island
The Cloisters (part of the Met)
Go bowling (with Denise?) -- we have plans to do this on Saturday
Drinks with Dave & gf?
Chumley's (hopefully Friday night)
Museum of Natural History
Dylan exhibit at the Morgan Library

Queens:
Walk through Forest Hills gardens (have sushi at Tako)
Get bagels from Bagels & Bialys
Walk through Briarwood
(though he did get to see my contribution to the Briarwood subway murals)
IHOP
Walk through Woodside

Museum of the Moving Image

Other:
Bronx zoo -- doing this Thursday, weather permitting
Brooklyn Heights waterfront
Williamsburg

See Pan's Labyrinth (we could do this with work peeps tomorrow night, but I just made plans for us to have dinner with my family then so I guess not)

What we did do:
On Thursday night we had dinner at Donovan's in Woodside. On Friday my parents called early in the morning and took us to IHOP. Then Nathan and I went into the city and walked through the bottom of Central Park from 59th Street, past Wollman rink and up through Strawberry Fields, then exited the park to look at the Dakota building (around 72nd) and proceeded to walk up Central Park West and Amsterdam, stopping at St. John the Divine (which I can't believe I've never seen before, it's so huge and beautiful) and up to Columbia University. Then we walked along Riverside Park back down to 103rd, and then went back to Queens to have dinner with my parents (which went pretty well I suppose).

On Saturday, we went to Brooklyn Heights, walked along the promenade across from downtown Manhattan, walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, walked up Broadway and over to Tribeca to see Stuyvesant High School and Hudson River Park, discovered this really interesting monument to the Irish Potato famine, walked past Ground Zero on the way to the train, which we took to Canal Street and fought through the crowds to Chinatown, where we ate dinner at Danny Ng's. Then we walked up Mulberry St., through Little Italy and Soho, and had a drink at XR Bar before meeting Andrea in Chelsea at the Magnet Theater, where we saw an improv show. Then we took a cab to St. Mark's and walked all around there looking for a place to eat and drink that wasn't too crowded and noisy. By this point my legs were killing me and I was starting to get cranky, but we ended up eating at Yaffa and then going to this Belgian beer bar, which was fun. It was that night that I got a text from [livejournal.com profile] albauk that her father had died and she was coming home from England the next day. :(

On Sunday, we had lunch at Katz's (which Nathan really enjoyed) and then met [livejournal.com profile] cynima at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, where we went on two very interesting tours. The second tour ended in a tenement apartment that was set up for shivah, the Jewish mourning period, which was eerily appropriate as we would be paying a shivah call the next day. That night was New Year's Eve. We went with my brother to a party at my cousin Elaine's house in Valley Stream. All my Uncle John's kids were there, and my uncle as well. Elaine had cooked up a storm. Her husband John is such a friendly, welcoming guy, he made Nathan feel very welcome, and before he knew it he had been talked into participating in a drinking game. Needless to say, the Englishmen drunk the silly American men under the table. I took video! It was brilliant. (I'd post it now but Nathan has my camera with him.) I was so proud! Not of the drinking, though that was quite impressive, but of how Nathan was getting along so well with my cousins' husband and fiance. It was really cute. He even talked to my uncle for awhile about the movie The Queen. Aw!

On Monday, we got together with [livejournal.com profile] cynima, Emily, and Emily's bf Brian to pay a shivah call to [livejournal.com profile] albauk at her father's house. It was a dreary day and raining. Not exactly how anyone wants to start their year, particularly for Shosh, but we all wanted to be there for her. It was also the only want she would get to see Nathan, unfortunately. Nathan was a bit nervous about going, because he was afraid his presence there wouldn't be appropriate, but Shosh was very glad to see him and he was glad he went. She seemed to be in very good spirits, considering. It seems like her trip went very well, which I was very happy to hear! Afterwards, Nathan and I went back to Manhattan and had dinner at R.U.B. I've been eating so much meat this holiday, it's crazy. Then we went home and had tea and watched the second half of The 40-Year-Old Virgin and rented Nacho Libre from On Demand. Nathan fell asleep a few minutes before the end, so I shut it off. He said he'd watch the rest tonight, but we only have it for 24 hours and it was about 10 when we started it. Oh well, I doubt we missed much. It was all silliness anyway.

Today I had to go to work. Blah. But Nathan met me for lunch, and it was very nice to see him waiting for me in the lobby of my office building. It was our longest time apart since he got here, and I think he missed me! Aw. :) After lunch he set off for Times Square and Rockefeller Center. Tina said I could leave at 4 but unfortunately I have no way of contacting Nathan, so I'll just have to meet him downstairs at 5. Tonight we're seeing a band called The View at Mercury Lounge. It's an early show, but that worked out since it's probably best that we have an early night. Nathan is a bit under the weather, which is unusual for him. I have to work again tomorrow but Thursday and Friday I'm calling in sick, dammit! :)
