The truth is out there
Aug. 19th, 2003 02:31 pmWell I'm back at work, luckily I'm taking a shortened day today. All day yesterday and today, I have been addicted to the Snopes Urban Legends site. I can't get over how many things I just assumed were true that are total bullshit or heard in so many variations that they can't be all true. For instance:
- The thing about humans using only 10% of their brains, totally wrong, it's 100%
- Praying mantises are not illegal to kill anywhere in the US
- The thing about everyone eating 10 spiders a year in their sleep: bubkis
- "Ring around the rosie" has nothing to do with the Black Plague
- There is no old blue law preventing sorority houses because they fall under the description of brothels
- There is no such thing as a pool water chemical that will change colors when someone pees in a pool
Not to mention that the whole thing about the CIW "riot stairs" (one of my dorms in college) is apparently something heard about the dorms in many colleges.
And this one I think is very important, since it's a complete debunking of those very common "self defense tips" emails that almost every woman has been forwarded by a well-meaning friend at some point.
This site is so totally addictive. I will never just believe any story that begins with "Well I heard that" or "Well my friend said" ever again.
