On TV with Franz, again!

nycmermaidFranz Ferdinand is all about getting me on television. ;) Last night marked the second time I've gone to be a part of a Franz Ferdinand televised appearance. I've only ever been on television in connection with one other artist, who will go unmentioned right now...:). Could it be that Franz is really good about letting their fans know about these things, or that they do more things with their fans? For such a popular band they certainly seem to be some of the most accessible, friendly musicians I've ever seen. And oh yeah, they rock too. :) My experience being a Franz Ferdinand fan has been sort of backward, I admit. I liked some of their songs but it took me quite awhile to really get into them. Then one day last summer, they had an open call for fans to be in a video they were shooting, and I just happened to have the day off. So I spent the day on a set watching them film and just generally wander around and talk to fans. I think I may be a bigger fan of Alex, Nick, Bob, and Paul than I am of Franz Ferdinand. I guess that makes me little but a shallow rock-n-roll groupie, but I can live with that.

albauk and vlamidala, among others, outside in the cold for an hour, we were let in to the building where Fuse has its studio. Since we were pretty close to the front of the line, we had great almost-front row left/center spots to stand. The PA instructed us to look happy and dancey and active and to wave our hands around a lot. I tend to do that at most shows anyway so that was really no problem. Then the band took the stage; Nick with his open shirt, gold chain and hairy chest; Alex with a really severe 80s poodle cut; Bob with a beard, trying to look grown up (just give up, Bob); and Paul looking like a 13-year-old who's been playing in the street all day (gaaah). It has occurred to me that Franz Ferdinand are the perfect example of sexy ugly. Alex in particular, especially with that haircut. It was his birthday yesterday and as the band started to play, several people shouted "Happy Birthday" but Alex didn't react at all. Maybe he's one of those people who doesn't like birthdays. They played Matinee first, which quite pleased me as it's the first Franz song I ever really liked. How you'd have a happy life/If you did the things you like! I was wearing a glass necklace which kept threatening to smack me in the face as I jumped, so I had to stick it in my shirt after awhile. The camera seemed to be on me quite a lot, and Alex seemed to be looking at me quite a lot too. (Of course, it often looks like people in the band are looking at you though when they're not.) [Oops, I forgot to add that on one song (Walk Away, I think) Paul played guitar and came into the audience. It was so very difficult not to just reach out and touch him!] They also played Do You Want To, The Fallen, Walk Away, Outsiders, and This Fire. I was kind of surprised that they didn't play Take Me Out, and even more surprised that the band didn't have any words for the audience. After the video shoot they were so gracious and thanked the crowd, but then I guess we had all hung out the whole day and learned choreography and everything, whereas this was only a small TV show concert. When the band left the stage, the PAs kept us around a little longer to shoot us mouthing words along with the taped songs, which was kind of funny (they couldn't shoot us doing that during the actual performance?).
Shosh and I left to get food after the show (which got out at about 8:30, good time) and didn't wait for the band, and I must say it was kind of a relief to not feel we needed to. See, I'm not really a groupie, not all the time...:b

Date: 2006-03-21 07:27 pm (UTC)Reminds me of the Love Monkey shoot, where they had all of us extras pretend to be dancing to music that wasn't even playing. They played the music first to give us the beat, then when the cameras were rolling, it was completely silent. So weird, tv is.
