I am leaving for London in 4 days and I still don't have a real Christmas present for Nathan. I was mulling over the idea of some sort of guy-friendly fingerless armwarmer or mitten, I even bought yarn I considered "guy-friendly," but then I decided that would be a whole lot of work for something I'm not even sure he'd wear. If I'm going to knit him something, I need to get started now. Or I could go out and buy something. It's not about money, but I don't want to spend a lot. He doesn't have many clothes, so I could just get him a nice jumper (yes, jumper) or shirt or something. He usually gets me several cute little things, like a figurine, a picture frame, a dish, a bag, or jewelry. Is there any equivalent of that for guys? I wish the Twin Peaks gold box edition DVDs came in Region 2 because if they did I'd get him that. He loves everything by David Lynch, as well as the Coen Brothers. I don't want to guess at a CD he might like. And I won't really have time to buy something for him in London before we meet up.

So what do you think about the armwarmer idea? I can't believe how bad I've been with procrastinating about this...I guess I hoped the perfect present would just present itself!

A digital weather station. Who doesn't want to know how the weather is inside and out.

Ha ha. He lives in England. I can pretty much already tell you what the weather is. ;)

Maybe you knit him the armwarmers (he will love them as you made them for him and he's a boy and won't buy that sorta thing for himself) and get him a nice shirt & jumper for going out or something. Does he need stuff that's more formal? Like a nice silk tie & a pair of cool cufflinks could work too.

Or you're really great at cooking -- so you could make up an IOU type thingie and treat him to a yummy romantic dinner/dessert/whatever that you could make while you're there?

I'm going with the armwarmers, and also going shopping to see if I find anything nice. That way I have a backup plan if the shopping fails. Thanks. :)

I say a hat, you can't really go wrong with it and it won't take you long to make.

Thing is, I don't remember ever seeing him wear a hat (not in non-joking manner, anyway). I'm not sure he likes hats. But it gets so cold where he lives I don't know how he could not. I guess he's just built for that weather! Or it's that he has a big ole' head and no hat to fit it. :)

Hrm, difficult. I just think arm warmers might be a bit of a girly type item...would a scarf be reasonable?

Well, I'm fashioning them more as "fingerless mittens." :S I dunno. I'm off to go shopping, to see if I can find something better. I already made him a scarf for Christmas 2 years ago, so it feels unoriginal to make another.

Oh I don't want to make you all :S ! Fingerless mittens are better than sleeves for guys, and maybe I'm making sweeping generalisations all over the place about knitware preferences!

No, it's okay! I was having doubts about it myself. But I just bought him a nice jumper to go with the fingerless mittens so now I feel better about the whole thing.
