It totally is all happening at the zoo

Wow, nothing makes you post on LJ like procrastination. Now that I have freelance work to do, I'd even rather do dishes than do work. And I hate doing dishes. It's my least favorite chore.

Instead, here is a photo post with some animals from the Central Park Zoo that I photographed last Saturday.

California sea lion...

...swimming.

Snow monkeys

Scarlet ibis

I'm still learning the birds. I think this is a golden-breasted starling. I am really looking forward to the day when I can actually clearly identify the animals in the tropical building, and sound all wise and informed to the visitors. :D

Toucan

Golden weaver's nest. The male birds do nothing but make these all day and hope some lady bird will move into one.

Okay, story here. I saw a tissue on the floor in the tropical house. I thought about picking it up, but decided against it (I didn't have my mittens). Two minutes later, this bird carried the tissue up into a tree and starting going to town shredding it. There was a staircase so I could go up and watch him do this. I haven't identified this bird yet but isn't he pretty?

Other birds saw what a good time the first bird was having with the tissue and wanted to get in on the action. This is a green aracari. I love how it's looking at me. It's like, Me: "Bird, *what* are you doing?" Bird: "Um, I'm shredding a tissue, what are *you* doing?"

Harbour seals getting fed.

I am having a blast so far with my zoo volunteer training. I'm so glad I discovered this. It really fills a hole I feel like I had in my life. I know that sounds cheesey but I love learning all this stuff about the different animals, and about conservation, and I can't wait to lead tours and chats and regale people with my knowledge. It's like it takes care of the love of performance and public speaking that I used to have when I was on the speech team in school, as well as the part of me that wishes I had majored in ecology or biology.

I was on the speech team too. You don't find too many people who were on the speech team.

That's awesome! I'm so glad you're doing this.
